SuperlativeSelections_Number1 (9-25-09)

Sébastian here with a new bit I'm gonna be throwing out there for everyone on a quite random basis. As Ivan has just launched his Tech House/Minimal Selections (which has already recieved high praise), I felt that I would also bring something new to the table with my brand spankin new SuperlativeSelections. Every once and a while I'll be sharing some of my favorite new tunes from my world of Electronic Music (3 tracks to be exact). This week, I'm tossing out some really great tracks i've just come upon and can't get out of my head, hope you enjoy them as much as I do. Don't forget to support the makers of these musics through purchasing their tunes over at Beatport.

Cheers,

~Séb
Savage Skulls
Miike Snow - Black & Blue (Savage Skulls Remix)
First up is the Savage Skulls version of Miike Snow's amazing original, Black & Blue. I can't begin to express my excitement for how awesome the sound put out in this is, I just can't, the song is literally stuck on repeat for me right now. With the original piano part from the original in full effect, a hypnotic and syncopated snare pattern is brought in leading up to an absolutely fantastic drop with some eclectic sounds flying all around the place. Savage Skulls are definitely bringing some new flavor to the world with what I'd pinpoint as a nostalgic House sound (As per their latest release on Dave Taylor's illustrious Dubsided imprint), and also with fresh sounding bits such as this remix. Keep a tab on these dudes, I definitely feel some good things coming from their neck of the woods.

Filthy Rich
Filthy Rich - Music Is Moving (Big In Ibiza Mix)
Filthy Rich has definitely had his foot in the door for some time now, but it wasn't until recently that I discovered that he was making totally awesome Tech House (before now, I had only thought he was an Electro House producer) . This song undoubtedly has some awesome sounds within, including dark instances with some rising parts that compliment it's subtle yet powerful groove. With this track now in my collection, I'm indeed hoping everyone follows suit and support the tracks this guy is churning out.

Round Table Knights
Round Table Knights - Belly Dance (Original Mix)
Round Table Knights are indeed making the people move with their latest release on Mowgli's Deadfish label, but this isn't their first successful effort that's landed them in the good books of many. For quite some time now, these guys have been keeping a steady pace in showcasing a diverse foreign sound with obvious hints of amazing Tech and Minimal influence. This song inparticular is without a doubt a direct hit on the bulls eye of phenomemal sounding Tech, containing clever accordian parts with a ridiculously catchy vocal part, and some whooshing perc driven goodness. Stay on these lads if you havn't before, and watch for anything they have their name on in the future.

Wildlight: Bad Dog

The abundance of bassline influenced music these days is unabashed and thriving, but with this comes a steaming handful of artists that continue to push out cookie cutter type tunes that leave one asking, "another one like that?..why?". Today you need not worry because as you might already know, you arrived at the right place knowing that you will only see the few that we absolutely feel put out true quality in this sound. Despite popular garb describing much more than music, we have been and are continually impressed with the production efforts of the UK based madman, Paul Kelevra. Landing original tracks and remixes on the Beatport Electro House charts one after another, he's showing that variety of sound has a place in his bag of tricks. With tracks like 'Grab Ya Funkstick' & 'Herez Another One' packing heat for Lee Mortimer's Wearhouse Music and EPs such as his 'Clean Jeans' effort with Los Angeles based Whiskey Pete on James Amato's prolific Potty Mouth Music, Kelevra showcases bass rhythm with extra punchy kicks and unforgettable hooks. Gaining professional support from such big wigs as Tommie Sunshine, Armand Van Helden, Drop The Lime, Will Bailey, Malente, and DJ Bam Bam, has definitely indicated that it doesn't look like the man is ready to stop his full frontal assault as the Bad Dog of bassline. Don't forget to stop by Beatport and grab his past and present workings, they're sure to get you off your ass and onto the dancefloor.

Wildlight : Calvertron

If someone were to describe music to you as, "Impossible to pigeonhole with all the excitement of a frog in a blender..", what might you start thinking? It remains unknown who the lyrical wizard behind this statement was, but it can be certain that they're definitely nailing the describing sound style of Alex Calver (more popularly known as Calvertron), former Twocker component alongside our favorite basshead (err.. Weazal), Will Bailey. For the past 6 year's he's churned out an impressive load of work to accommodate an equally impressive international tour schedule, resulting in the what can only be rendered as undeniably genius. With a solid home base at Jack Knife Records and a slamming new release on Lee Mortimer's Wearhouse Music, his sound has indeed made an imprint on today's future sound of dance music. As well as creating immense wobble fusion these days, the man behind it all is also extremely well versed in the production of Tech House, with such amazing tracks as "Magic Carpet", "Oh Ley" & "Opium" under his belt. With some solid releases in the pipeline through his Jack Knife Label and from MildWild favorite Potty Mouth Records, it's definitely time you keep a tab on this guy if you havn't already. Feed him some support and check him out over at Beatport, also drop by his myspace page to let him know how you feel.

A familiar pounding of bass, a scratchy, machine like growl, and hissing goodness that gets the party started just right; Sounds like Alan Hostage, our favorite Scotland based bass fiend. As always, Alan's been up to some flabbergasting things, pumping out fresh and original tracks that as any follower and fan would expect are injected with some filthy, Ravey love. Boemsklatsch?

DJ $Jammie The Money, DJ Mike Mago, DJ Illvester, MC Atactic, and VJ's Ramkraak (Mark Assies and Roel Oude Nijhuis) are Boemsklatsch, the insane product of years of partnership and wild nights at the decks. The Netherlands based group has recently seen the free release of their 'Bonafied EP', which is nothing short of a fidget carnival with an open bar to say the least. The original version of the song is child-like and doesn't hesitate to get all Fisher-Price sounding, definitely some new sort of something going on. On remix duties is a full Netherlands based crew! Dem Slackers and Mightyfools hit you with wobbly original and eye opening takes on the track, while Eric De Man follows suit and brings you some B-More infused Dubstep action that wiggles subtely. Download the EP here, which also includes the free video of this insane bunch getting ultra colorful. Don't miss out on this Netherland gold, it surely pounds proper!

Boemsklatsch - Bonafied (Dem Slackers Floor Dance Remix)

A ridiculous remix indeed! Some wobbly turns down some filthy paths lead you to a grimey Dubstep breakdown that could probably scramble the brains of children and senior citizens

Boemsklatsch - Bonafied (Mightyfools Remix)
A bit of high pitched madness, these fools don't hesitate to drop some mighty knowledge on your ass! Followers of the Bassline, this one's for you

Don't Forget His Name!

With the coming of the new year, it looks as if more and more barriers are slated to be broken in the ever expanding world of House Music. El Presidente pictured above happens to be one of the bright shining stars of today's head turning sound of punchy drums and "serious" basslines, a term we cannot argue with as the sounds are in fact, serious. Jesse Rose, Captain of the Brittain based Made To Play label along with Deep House and Tech outlet, Front Room Recordings, is doing the finest job in keeping a progressive and steady release schedule at the same time as he regularly plays out live. Rose's much anticipated fourth-coming (no pun intended) album, "What Do You Do If You Don’t" is due out on Dave "Switch" Taylor's vinyl distributing Dubsided this year, whilst he also saw the release of his 2008 work featuring Hot Chip, the "Forget My Name" LP; including an echoey "Open Shutters Dub" of the track and the clever floor thumper, "Touch My Horn". As everyone kicks off this year's January, Radio 1 makes sure that it's with a Rose style bang as they present him with the honor of cleverly gliding through the first Essential Mix of 2009. Complete with new tracks from Jesse's label mate and studio partner, Oliver $, as well as new Dirtybird and Made To Play boys, Zombie Disco Squad, it's a grade A work of art. It remains safe to say that Jesse Rose and his Made To Play army of Front Room ready soldiers are on an illustrious roll to say the least, stay tuned and enjoy.

Yes, It's Really Rusko!

With so much buzz surrounding such a breakthrough sound mechanic, how could BBC Radio 1 and Pete Tong not offer 23 year old Christopher Mercer (AKA Rusko) a chance to show the world what he can mash together in a two hour period via Essential Mix. As we all know, no Average Joe gets an essential mix, and with that being said it's plain to see that Rusko has put in a solid amount of work to obtain the priviledges he has today. Born in Leeds in 1985 to a musical family, Rusko was constantly surrounded by a musical crowd, whether it was by his families pianos, guitars, banjo’s or saxophones, or in his later years when the heavy reggae and dub sound systems of Leeds took over. With support and a jump-start help from SupDub, Chris was introduced to the widespread style of Dub Step music, investing heaps of time in the connecting of himself and the music. The result: A production genius toting a Degree in Music Performance and an impressive array of original tracks and remixes that have been making people go off the walls. As a producer, Rusko has proven again and again that he's more than prepared to bring some heavy sound and to continue his reign of keeping it ruthless and absolutely insane. His sound continues to develop with different BPM’s that lean to Jungle, House, Hip-Hop & Electro, ensuring that you can immediately tell a Rusko track when you hear it. The Essential mix is an aural concussion to say the least, with rapturous winding bass wobbles that wiggle into your head with no intention of leaving. A ridiculous tracklisting boasting such collaborations as Crookers, Clipz, Caspa and Diplo is the icing 0n the cake, and at that the rest is up to you.

An unusually modern sounding track, thrusting, piston like sounds charge full force in this electrified showcase.

Listen as Rusko masterfully smashes Audio Bullys' sound down to a science, impressive noise selection and a precisely delivered remix, amazing!

The Concept of Dancing, That Sorta Thing

Upon first hearing the freshly cultivated and enormously bass'd, 'We Can Play EP' by Potty Mouth kids Chris James & Lee Dearn, my eardrums trembled as I was taken through a kickdrum vortex of Tech-House reminiscent sound with deep booming bass to back up the whole damn thing. The combination of the two and their signature sounds is astounding to say the least, and as I hear more of what their producion has to say I can't help but keep listening. With new music and other projects on the horizion, the boys are hard at work pushing their long talked about collaborative effort, DubNoir Music. The label was created with the intention of fusing "together deep house with a mixture of techno and lashings of jackin house producing an end product that wont sound out of place in a warm-up set or at peaktime", and with a description like that how could you not want to investigate. Take a listen to some choice tracks by the two and let the music speak for itself.

Chris James & Lee Dearn - Torcida Cumbia (Original Mix)
A thumpy and stomping mix of some classic foreign sounds and some incredible flute action. Heavy, heavy bass.

Chris James & Lee Dearn - The Concept of Dancing (Original Mix)
A smashing vocal track with some in your face rudeness and some story-telling to boot, a wonderful concept.

Chris James - Take U (Original Mix)
Chris James delivers a proper House rhythm, complete with clean vocals and a subtle bassline

Have You Sena Him?

Every once in a while I like to get nostalgic and let loose on a MSTRKRFT esque synth binge in listening, returning to my favorites from months past to give me that little fix of aural electricity that I once craved so frequently. As I await the arrival of fresh works from such MildWild favorites as The Japense Popstars, Auto Erotique (Formally VND/LSM), and the afore mentioned, MSTRKRFT, I've been given a little help from a man who's all about that sort of heavyness, allowing myself to indulge in something a little more up to date. Dim Mak signee and San Francisco native, Dan Sena has been on a roll recently with the release of his brand new, 'Algarve EP'. Killer noiseyness, heavy synths and unstoppable ear humpage pack some of these tracks with that classic electro sound that gets so undeniably great sometimes, also while keeping it rocker with crazy guitar works. The Dan man sent me over a copy of the EP and gave me the greenlight to share my personal favorites in full quality, hope you enjoy it.

Dan Sena - The Rising Sun
Some classic guitars and pitchy business can be heard in this beastly synth take on a lawnmower blades day to day routine; Rip, Slice, Slice, Rip.

Dan Sena - Unfinished Buisness
Some bobbing, terrorizing filth. Sleeze filled and exsuberant at the same time, a great electro jam.

Make em' Say Uhhh! Uhhhh! Ba-na-na-na!

I received a nice new amount of some fine workings by our good friend Brian Randall, more notably known as Bananana of Hollywood California, the 19 year old knob turning madman who's recently been churning out a cool sound with his familiar Electronica style and radical rythems. Aside from hammering away on the completion of his debut "Sunda EP", the fella's been putting it down properly for his hometown with some live shows that have proven to be genuine, fresh, and room destroying. Our last visit to the Los Angeles area graced us with being in attendance for a fine live show the lad put on, and he's sent us the live recording to post for the listening pleasure of all, a fine mix and quite diverse from his regular production style.
